How often should I wash my hair?

Question: How often should I wash my hair? Can Washing my hair every day dry my hair out or hurt it in any way?

Answer: How often you should wash or shampoo your hair depends on your hair really. It depends on what you like. Some hair gets funky quick. I say, if it’s funky, oily, or just plain ole style less, by all means wash hair.

The hair carries vital minerals such as calcium, phosphorus nitrogen and iron, over washing can strip your hair of those minerals. Try washing your hair every other day and remember what you use to wash hair, will make a difference.

If your hair is dry then use a moisturizing shampoo. If it’s oily, then use a clarifying or a body building shampoo. I like Redken and Nexxus; these have stood the test of time and give excellent results.

Some clients with extremely curly hair tend to wash their hair once a week or even twice a month as to let the natural oils set in; I had a client asked me what I thought about that and I will tell you what I told her. I think YUK!

Twice a month? Are you kidding? Listen; it’s true that the natural oils of the scalp lends itself to shine and some degree of balance but the oil build up known as sebum is not so good for the follicle; it tends to block the hair follicle from the very much needed oxygen and can actually make the hair weak not to mention the smell. So no, I don’t agree with letting the wash hair day go to only twice a month.

Brushing your hair when it’s wet is going to cause some breakage; the reason is that hair is weakest when it is wet. Use a wide tooth comb and try to avoid using a brush or a thin tooth comb when detangling your wet hair. You should also brush your hair before you wash it as to detangle it and loosen up the dirt that you’ve accumulated in the days prior.

Important Wash Tips:

  • Before you wash hair make sure you brush or comb it out as to detangle.
  • Use luke warm water; hot water opens and expands the shaft and cuticle making it extremely weak.
  • Wet the hair thoroughly and apply the shampoo.
  • Don’t scrub your scalp raw when washing your hair, it isn’t necessary. A light circular motion is all that is needed for a thorough cleansing.
  • Use a good shampoo. Not all shampoos are created equal same. The cheap shampoos tend to have ingredients that are not good for your hair or health believe it or not.
  • Never bring the ends up to the scalp when washing; this will just tangle your hair.
  • Use a good moisturizer or rinse depending on your hair needs.
  • Try to rinse with cold water for this brings shine by closing the cuticle.
  • Never towel dry, the rubbing with the towel breaks the hair and tangles it.
