Question: What treatments are there for treating thinning hair?

Answer: Thinning hair can be caused by a number of reasons; the good news is, there is help and there are remedies you can incorporate in your daily routine that can help your hair grow back. Yes, I mean DAILY routine. Four out of six remedies that I will suggest will need to be applied on a daily bases.

Supplements:

The first option for treating thinning hair is vitamins and supplements. Biotin should be ingested at a 5,000mg daily dose if you’re anemic or a vegetarian, taking iron will help.

Minoxidil:

Rogaine is a topical over the counter product that contains Minoxidil. This comes in a clear liquid form and has to be applied to the roots daily. It really helps grow back hair but, if you’re not careful you’ll end up growing hair on your face. You should make sure to wash your hands thoroughly after every use.

The FDA approved pill:

Propecia is a prescription pill that has been FDA approved for men. This pill is effective for growing hair as long as you continue to use it, but if you plan on having children this is not a good option because it may cause birth defects.

Hair dyes:

Hair color or glazes coat the cuticle so that hair looks fuller and thicker. It would be best to use the dye with a 10 volume peroxide as apposed to the regular 20 volume.

LED therapy:

LED means light-emitting diode which is a form of electroluminescence. Hair Max Laser Comb is a FDA approved device that shines red LEDs on the scalp to reverse thinning. The color of the emitted light depends on the composition and condition of the semi conducting material used, and can be infrared, visible, or near-ultraviolet. The recommended treatment dose is three times a week for at least five weeks before seeing any visible results. Like the other treatments, this option only works as long as you use it.

Hair Transplants:

If you’re considering a hair transplant, go for the single follicles transplant as opposed to the clumps. Each single follicle is surgically transplanted to avoid the “plug look” and cost start at $10,000 and up depending on the amount of follicles. Transplant start growing after three month and take about a year before the full result.
