Question: What natural hair relaxer do you recommend for natural red curly course hair? What is the difference between a regular salon relaxer and a natural hair relaxer?

Answer: Natural hair relaxers are a no lye base product. Lye is sodium hydroxide and is used by many industries as a base for paper, textiles, soaps, detergents among other things. Since natural hair relaxers obviously do not contain this compound, they tend to be less potent. No lye hair relaxers work great on non-chemically processed hair especially naturally curly hair that has no degree of kink to it.

Straighten Hair Without Damage

The product I mostly recommend for naturally red curly and course hair is the natural hair relaxer manufactured by a company called PHYTO Phytodefrisant Botanical Hair Relaxing Balm. The Botanical Hair Relaxer is a break through product with an active ingredient of alkaline water which penetrates into the hair shaft without breaking the cuticle (the outer layer). The alkaline water softens the poly tide bonds of hair resulting in an elongated or loosened bond pattern thus making the hair straighter. This product works well with curly hair but don’t expect it to process extremely straight because that is not what a natural hair relaxer is intended to do.

As with any hair straightener, the hair must be styled either with a blow dryer or a flat iron or both. I always recommend keeping the styling products consistent with each other, (if you use the botanical natural hair relaxer , be sure to use the botanical conditioners and lotions for optimal results.
