Hair Straightener
« Previous EntriesSince my hair is already very straight, would it be worth it to invest in a straightner?
Sunday, June 1st, 2008First, thank you so much for this website! I’ve just discovered it and
it’s already been A LOT of help.
My question is about hair straightening. I have a new hair cut that is a little
bit longer than the famous Katie Holmes cut. My hair is very, very straight but
tends to curl a little bit at the ends. This has never been much of a problem
as my hair has always been long, but this short new ‘do requires my ends to
be straight. Since my hair is already very straight, would it be worth it to
invest in a straightener? (If so, what do you recommend for people who already
have straight hair?) I haven’t touched a blow dryer in months (it’s
inconvenient to me and loud even for a dorm bathroom in the early morning).
Should I try a wet-to-dry straightener? Or possibly try blow drying?

How do hair chemical processes change the shape and texture of the hair?
Sunday, January 13th, 2008Question: How do hair chemical processes change the shape and texture of the hair?
Answer: A good example of hairs pliability is pasta. Think of hair like a strand of spaghetti, When it’s dry it’s hard and shaped in a certain way, but when it’s soften by water it can be reshaped and dried into that shape. Chemical bonds are responsible for that ability in hair.
Hair is primarily made of keratin and contains four types of molecular bonds Polypeptide bonds, Ionic/salt bonds, Cystine bonds and Hydrogen bonds. Knowing how the four types of bonds work in the hair will help you utilize the chemicals that are available to us more efficiently.
Polypeptide bonds - called sugar bonds, hold amino acid chain to another. The attachment is by negative/alkaline to
Why is it important to detangle hair from points to root?
Sunday, December 9th, 2007Question: Why is it important to detangle hair from points to root?
Answer: Donna, thank you for taking the time to e-mail your questions. I have numbered the questions and will answer each one.
1. Why is it important to detangle hair from points to root?
Detangling your hair from the points (ends) up is the best way because you avoid the tangles from conglomerating in the middle of the length. If you start from the root, the tangled hair is pulled unnecessarily downward and that tends to bunch up the tangles. If you start from the ends, the tangles travel a much shorter distance to freedom.
2. What effects does water have on the hair and what is the difference of the effects of hot water versus cold water.
The hair shaft and cuticle are porous, water soaks the poly tides (a microscopic structure that holds the hair together) and weakens it much like a wet piece of
How do ceramic flat irons work?
Saturday, December 8th, 2007Question: How do ceramic flat irons work?
Answer: There is a lot of information circulating on the internet about the differences and mechanics of flat irons and how they work. A lot of people wonder how does this small piece of equipment control and reshapes your puffy, frizzy out of control hair making it lay perfectly flat. It is true the styling flat iron is a marvel of scientific design and technology. Basically the flat iron combines three elements or forces (not to be confused with the movie “The Fifth Element” staring Bruce Willis) thermal, mechanical and electrical. These forces combine to create a smooth, shiny manageable hairstyle that is very
I had my hair straightened last week and my stylist panicked when she saw the results. Should I change stylist?
Friday, November 30th, 2007Questions: I had my hair straightened last week and my stylist panicked when she saw the results. Should I change stylist?
Answer: It’s never a good sign when the hairdresser panics. That’s what happened to Barbara Cabrera-Avila, 38, when she returned to the salon about six weeks after having her hair straightened a couple of years ago. The cause for alarm: several bald spots in the back of her head.
What Happened?
The Adelphi, Md., resident began having her curls straightened at the age of six so her hair would be easier to comb and style. She says over-processed hair likely played a role in her hair loss, and stress could have been a factor. What’s certain is that three dermatologists advised her to take a break from hair straighteners, also known as relaxers.
Are Biosilk Hair Care Products better for straight hair than Mizani hair care system?
Friday, November 16th, 2007Question: Are Biosilk Hair Care Products better for straight hair than Mizani hair care system?
Answer: Yes, I would rather recommend the Biosilk system for straight hair over Mizani.
Reason:
Although Biosilk offers a complete line of hair care and styling products for all hair types, I find that Biosilk works better on straighter, thinner even finer hair than that of course or extremely curly hair. That is not to say however, that the Biosilk line of hair care products does not work on curly, thick or extremely dry hair, it does give good results to that type of hair, I am just saying that
