Question: I have been given a hair salon management position at the salon that I’ve been working at for three years now, any pointers?

    Answer: Congratulations on your promotion!

Now that you are in the managerial seat, your responsibilities have just increased 100 fold. Many great opportunities exist in the field of beauty and you can go as far as your heart desires with right attitude.

Hair salon managers have a lot on their plate because salon owners expect much from their managers. Since you have accepted the responsibility and are obviously interested in doing a good job, here are some pointers that will help you be the efficient manager you can be.

First I would recommend you buy a good book on salon management. Read it, study it, and apply it to your daily routine. Knowledge of business principals, book keeping, salesmanship and psychology are very helpful. The bottom line is that salon owners want to increase their bottom line. You as the manager should strive to look out for the best interest of the financial status of the salon, so here are some description of what you will be expected to be accountable for.

    1. Shrinkage and misuse of products must be monitored.
    2. Stylist working schedules
    3. Rendering of satisfactory services
    4. Enforcement of hygienic and sanitary rules
    5. Buying equipment and merchandise economically
    6. Keeping financial and service records
    7. Advertizing
    8. Sales

Establish your position with the rest of your coworkers with respect. Don’t use sides but be compassionate and comforting. Most of all…LEAD BY EXAMPLE!
