Question: I bought a jet black hair dye and I would like to get some red high lights, Should I dye my own hair black before going to the salon for the red highlights?
Answer: When considering black dyes you should always be aware that black dye is the most permanent color in the spectrum and the hardest to lift out of the hair shaft. Naturally black hair is very susceptible to other hair colors like reds and browns but black hair dye is a totally different story.
Good Advice:
Honestly, I don’t think you should dye your own hair especially if you’re seeking a unique look. A good hair stylist who’s experienced with black dyes and red highlight will prove to be priceless to you. Take your time and ask around to see if you can find the best stylist for the task I promise you it will be well worth it in the end. Don’t be afraid to ask them about their experience in achieving your goals. Ask them to show you pictures of their work. If you come across a stylist that’s honest enough to admit that they are probably not your best choice than ask he or she to recommend someone.
There are many creative ways and techniques that today’s hair stylist can achieve the black hair with the red highlights look. Most color savvy stylist will try to avoid over processing your hair and that’s where the technique used comes to play.
Self Appliction
If you dye your hair black, it will take a lot more bleaching or stripping time to lift the color to a level that is conducing to red. When applying the black dye to your hair don’t apply it to the ends until ten or fifteen minutes before color processing time is up. Why? Because hair ends are more fragile and dry than the rest of the hair. The hair shaft is like a sponge that sucks up all the color especially the ends. That is why every now and then you’ll see somebody with black hair and pitch black ends.
So my answer to you is find an experienced stylist to give you the look you want. You’ll be glad you did.

Product Reviews
My daughter has been having a blast with the Conair Pro Color. She has darker brown hair, and all the colors look good so far. It’s a way for young girls to put the streaks of color in their hair, and it washes out in the next shampoo. My daughter is 13 and uses it very easily on herself.
I want to use it too! My daughter bought it with her birthday money, so the only way I can use it is if I buy the refills. ~smile~ No problem!
