My stylist gave me the wrong hair color; if I go back will I have to pay for another coloring?

Question: I just recently got my hair dyed dark brown from a highlighted blonde color. The one and only thing I asked for was not to have a red tone in my hair, but it seems that’s what I’ve ended up with. She used an orange-ish substance on my hair to fill in the highlights, and then applied the dye.

Going back there is not an option, and I was wondering since it is an all-over color, can I buy a neutral brown/dark brown box color and go over it? My sister would be doing it as she has done it for many others with good results before]

And lets just say I did go back there, I’ve never done this before, so

would she make me pay for another coloring as it was not what I asked for?

Answer: Hi Kate, Thanks for that great question; coloring bleached out hair back to a neutral color can be a tricky thing.

At least your stylist had the sense not to give you green tones! I’m sorry to read that you are not so happy with your new color, so let’s see if we can get your hair color to where you want it to be.

Your first question is, can you buy a neutral brown/dark brown box color and go over it?

Yes you can! Make sure there is no ash or olive color bases in the mix as this will oxidize coppery tones. If the brown color is indeed a neutral brown based color, than go for it. Don’t over process and do try to use a ten volume peroxide or spill out half the one in the box and add water (1/2 &1/2 equal parts), this will allow for more deposit than lift. You’re lucky to have your sister to help because it can get really messy. Note: don’t do the ends until ten minutes before rinsing (ends tend to be much more porous than the rest of the hair thus sucking up the color to quickly.

About your second question; will she make you pay for another color? Well I think that all depends on the relationship you have with your stylist. If you and she are cool, she might be able to convince her senior manager to let her redo the color process with out any charge to you. Some managers make the stylist pay for the percent that is owed or the product that is used so, you might want to consider these things when or if you decide to demand the justice… of which you are due.

Don’t forget too use after dare products that cater to colored hair and use a protein conditioner before any chemical process.

    Good Luck!
