Question: When should I recommend my client to get a retouch on the roots to keep her hair high lights looking fresh?
Answer: After three months the client will require a color retouch on the front hairline, the natural parting and the crown. This will last a further three months before highlighting should be repeated on the ROOTS of the entire head: Notice I stress the word roots.
At this stage, it is important only to apply the color to the regrowth. The ends should be avoided because this hair is already high lighted and adding more bleach will just give you an overall bleached color affect when in reality what we are seeking is a high lighted affect.
Matching tones:
Aim for a perfect combination of tone. Never, for example, create white streaks in black hair unless of course the client absolutely demands it. Apply chestnut and dark red tones on brown and black shades, titian and marmalade tones on red hair and blonde tones on mousy shades.
Avoiding over tones:
It is unnecessary to use an oxidizing toner on very light high light because they have already been bleached to the required shade. When peroxide toners are used on light high lights they have a slight lightening effect on the hair’s natural color and regrowth will become obvious a month later. The ideal base for very light high lights is mousy brown.
Tinted lights:
Tinted lights are successful on all shades. Instead of bleaching the highlights, apply a tint by using the weaving method. The result is a natural looking movement of color rather than a high lighted effect.
