Which dandruff shampoo is best?
By HairstyleQuestions.com | September 15, 2007
Question: Which dandruff shampoo is best? What are some of the differences between them?
Answer: Frequent shampooing and selecting the best dandruff shampoo is the key to fighting dandruff removing the flakes as fast as they form by washing the hair at least several times weekly and as often as daily. Some people mistakenly think that dandruff is caused by a dry scalp which leads to shampooing less frequently and becomes a major contributor to flakes. Additionally not rinsing dandruff shampoos out of hair completely can also add to the problem.
There are many different types of dandruff shampoos and medicated shampoos, each with their on combination of active ingredients. You may need to experiment until you find the right dandruff shampoo that works best for you. The new improved dandruff shampoos have changed considerably and have become a lot more sophisticated. Dandruff is commonly treated with a shampoo that contains salicylic acid (some brand names: X-Seb, Scalpicin), the prescription medicine selenium sulfide (brand names: Selsun Blue, Exsel) or zinc pyrithione (some brand names: DHS Zinc, Head & Shoulders).

Dandruff shampoos with salicylic acid and sulfur tend to loosen flakes so that they may be washed out easily. This particular shampoo product comes highly recommended by doctors and pharmacists. The highly effective agent: Nizoral by % (active ingredient: ketoconazole) is a reliable antifungal shampoo that helps reduce the number of yeast funginal-organisms present on the scalp.
Because they have been know to discolor blonde, red or lightly chemically colored hair, be sure follow the product directions carefully and to rinse well after shampooing. Alternating a regular dandruff shampoo with an antifungal shampoo when dandruff appears is highly recommended by dermatologists. Look for a shampoo containing tea tree oil. There are many tea tree oil shampoos available in health food stores and some drug stores, and many people report these products help with dandruff.
Important Tip:
A key point to remember is to choose the mildest shampoo possible that gets the job done. Don’t forget detergent based shampoos will clean the hair and scalp well however they often dry out your scalp and will make the flaking worse in the long run. Some other dandruff shampoos work by simply normalizing the pH of the scalp.
Apply the following tips for best results.
- Brush your scalp in advance to carefully loosen flakes before shampooing.
- When you start to shampoo, massage your scalp without scratching. This will remove the loose flakes and the moisturizer in the shampoo will protect the scalp.
- Lather the hair a second time; leave the shampoo on the hair for five minutes (or as directed) before rinsing to give sufficient time for the medicine to work properly.
- After the five minutes rinse thoroughly as this action should slow the intensified growth of the natural yeast-like organisms.
You should begin noticing a difference in a very short period of time when you start using these shampoos. These types of dandruff shampoos can easily be used 2 – 3 times per week. Remember each product is different so be sure to follow the directions when using the shampoo you choose.

Product Reviews
I bought this with little hope because usually these types of Shampoo dry out my hair and scalp too much to be effective.
After first use I had a lot of dandruff that was free from my scalp but stuck in my thick hair. After a second wash to rinse that away I was well on my way to being free of that problem.
I would recommend it to anyone.
