Where does Curly Hair come from?
By Yvonne Dueno | September 13, 2007
Question: Where does curly hair come from? Why is my curly hair so dry? How do I stop it from being so frizzy?
Answer: Curly hair is beautiful. I personally would love to have natural curly hair. I use to perm my hair; twenty four perms in all. But I have resolved to accept my not so straight and not so wavy hair.
“All hair texture is measured by the degree of which one’s hair is either fine or coarse, which in turn varies according to the diameter of each individual hair. There are usually four major types of curly hair textures: fine, medium, coarse and wiry. Within the four texture ranges hair can also be thin, medium or thick density and it can be curly, wavy or kinky. Hair is genetically programmed and it tends to change over time.”
It was believed that the shape of the hair shaft determined the hair type. A round shape shaft meant straight hair, oval meant wavy and flat meant curly hair. Scientist today say that the shape of the follicle from which the hair protrudes dictates the shape of the individual hair. There are various degrees to each shape thus the many
types of curls and waves whether your hair is curly or straight is determined by the shape of the follicle itself and the direction in which each strand grows out of its follicle. Curly hair is shaped like an elongated oval and grows at a sharp angle to the scalp.
Curly hair has a different biological structure than straight hair. It tends to be much drier than straight hair because the oils secreted into the hair shaft by the sebaceous glands can more easily travel down the shaft of straight hair. People with very curly hair may find that this hair type can be dry, hard to manage, and often frizzy.Curly hair is usually more dry than straight hair because the cuticle in curly hair is permanently raised lending itself to dissipation of moisture.
All hair especially curly hair, is affected by the amount of humidity in the air. It serves as a “truth serum” for the hair, forcing water back into the hair fiber and forcing the hair shaft to return to its original structure. This may be more noticeable in somebody with curly hair because it tends to get frizzy when the humidity rises.
Important Style Tips:
- Since curly hair gets frizzy, and tends to dry out at the ends, I would recommend that you keep it moisturized with a humectant conditioner like the one Nexxus sells.
- Trim it a little especially around the contour of your face. This will keep the ends from looking overly dry.
- Don’t wash it every day as to let the natural oils set in. If you need to wash daily, don’t use shampoo every day use conditioner as a substitute for shampoo.
- Use a spray on leave in conditioner.
- A good anti-frizz serum is good not just for the frizz but also for shine.
Here’s a secret that hair stylist know without a doubt, most people with straight hair wish they had curly hair. So love your curly hair and treat it good.

Product Reviews
I have baby-fine hair, though plenty of it. If I don’t want it to be slack and flat, I have to set it. So I tried this set of curlers, wanting the large size for volume, not for fluffy curls (no mall-hair, thanks!)
This curler set is a bit large (note, for travel, you’d be better off with a small travel set or curling iron.) It has 12 LARGE roller, lined with a velvet-flocked material. Each is slit to fit over the rails of the heater. They heat in about 2 minutes. Then you roll the hair, fit a wire clip over the roller and leave in for 5-20 minutes. (Some hairdressers claim you get a better, long-lasting effect by leaving them in for a long time.)
The slot down the length of the roller makes it hard to put in the clips because the clip wants to go into the slot instead of around the roller. To avoid this, you can push the clip on top of the roller (rather than under, where it belongs) and then ROTATE the clip into position. This avoids catching the clip into the slot, which is plenty annoying. Once you get the hang of this maneuver, it’s pretty quick to set your hair.
